Artist Showcase - Keith Scaife
There have always been two threads to my artistic life - painting and model making - and I'm constantly jumping back and forth between the two with equal enthusiasm.
I've made SF art for as long as I can remember, influenced by Gerry Anderson's TV shows, Stanley Kubrick's superb 2001: A Space Odyssey, and New English Library’s Science Fiction Monthly magazine - filled with wonderful book cover artwork - and I knew from a very young age that was what I wanted to do.
After three years at my local art college, I went on to specialise in model making at Sunderland Polytechnic, with a view to a career in movie special effects. A chance encounter there with Film & TV model maker Martin Bower led me to paint some concept artwork for a project he was working on. Those paintings then led me to approach an artist's agency, and suddenly I found myself a professional illustrator, producing covers for all the major UK publishers, with authors such as Iain M Banks, Walter Jon Williams, and Larry Niven. I was still making models though, as I find it much easier to think and design in 3D, so for almost every piece of artwork there’s a maquette made first to work from.
Over the years I have also produced a lot of non-SF model work for giftware companies such as Lilliput lane, Border Fine Arts, and Danbury Mint, as well as working with Martin Bower again - making moulds and resin casting.
Most recently I’ve gone back to 2D, producing concept artwork for a project with Livemation Films.
