Artist Showcase - John Howe

BACK TO INDEX

John Howe was born in 1957 in Vancouver and grew up in British Columbia. He studied at the Ecoles des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg and never returned to Canada after his studies, preferring to stay and explore the history and mythology of Europe, eventually settling in Switzerland to live with his wife and their son.

His early influences included Frank Frazetta and Gustave Doré as well as medieval art and architecture. He discovered the world of The Lord of the Rings at school and immediately began to draw his own illustrations for the classic trilogy. Now he is a renowned fantasy artist and book illustrator, best known for his illustrations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and merchandise, but not limited to this world. He has also illustrated many other fantasy titles including Robin Hobb’s Farseer, Liveship Traders and Tawny Man trilogies; Robert Holdstock’s Mythago Wood; George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings along with the Anglo-Saxon legend of Beowulf. He has written and illustrated, Lost Worlds, which draws together his stunning artwork and wealth of historical knowledge to create an exploration of abandoned, buried, forgotten and imagined civilisations both historical and mythological. John’s other books include; Fantasy Art Workshop, which he calls a “philosophical how-to book” on drawing and painting, the breathtaking Forging Dragons, which shows a collection of his dragon art, and Myth and Magic: The Art of John Howe, a portfolio of his Tolkien and fantasy covers, calendar artwork and exhibition paintings.

In 1997, his reputation as a noted Tolkien artist led Peter Jackson to invite him and fellow Tolkien expert Alan Lee, to be the concept artists for The Lord of the Rings and more recently, The Hobbit film trilogies. John’s involvement in these projects along with the memorable characters and environments he created for the big screen has made him one of the most celebrated fantasy artists of our time.

Note: John Howe's work will be exhibited at Loncon 3 by Arena Illustration.
